Semi-Bluff in Poker: A Draw That Wins Two Ways
A semi-bluff is a bet or raise with a hand that is not the best now but can become it, most often a draw. It wins two ways: when the opponent folds, and some of the times they call, because the draw hits. That is what separates it from a pure bluff, which wins almost only through the fold.
8♠7♠ in the big blind on the turn
In the big blind with 8♠7♠, you called the button's c‑bet on T♠ 6♦ 2♠. Turn 5♥, the button bets 60% of the 11bb pot, 85bb deep. Fold, call or check‑raise 3x?
See the answer
8♠7♠ has 15 outs: 9 spades for the flush and 6 cards (three 9s and three 4s that are not spades) for the straight, so 32.6% to hit on the river.
| Option | What you add | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Call | 6.6bb | 27.3% equity |
| Check‑raise to 19.8bb | 19.8bb | 52.9% folds if it were a pure bluff |
8♠7♠'s equity if the check‑raise is called, with the river to come:
| Button's hand | 8♠7♠'s equity |
|---|---|
| K♥Q♥ | 47.7% |
| A♠K♦ | 45.5% |
| A♥T♦ | 34.1% |
| 4♦3♦ | 31.8% |
| T♥T♣ | 29.5% |
When called, the check‑raise keeps at least 29.5% equity against each of these hands: it does not need the 52.9% folds of a pure bluff. The expected answer is the check‑raise.
Bluff and semi-bluff side by side
| Pure bluff | Semi-bluff | |
|---|---|---|
| Equity when called | almost none | the draw's |
| How it wins | only through the fold | through the fold and when the draw hits |
| Folds needed | the full price of the bet | fewer, depending on the equity |
