Equity Realization: The Share of Your Equity You Actually Win
Equity realization is the share of its equity a hand actually wins. Equity counts the turn and the river as if both came for free; at the table, a bet on the turn can make a hand fold first. A draw that folds whenever it misses the turn reaches the river only when it has already hit. Position and the bets still to come decide how close a hand gets to its raw equity.

Enter J♥T♥ against A♠A♦ on 9♥ 8♣ 2♥, then add a turn card:
Equity to the river against hitting on the turn
| Hand and board | Draw | Outs | Hits on the turn | Equity to the river |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J♥T♥ vs A♠A♦ on 9♥ 8♣ 2♥ | straight and flush draw | 15 | 33.3% | 56.3% |
| 7♣6♣ vs A♠K♦ on K♣ 9♣ 2♦ | flush draw | 9 | 20% | 38.9% |
| Q♦J♦ vs A♠K♦ on K♠ 9♣ 4♥ | gutshot | 4 | 8.9% | 18.7% |
Each draw's equity counts both the turn and the river. If J♥T♥ folds to a turn bet whenever it misses, it reaches the river only the 33.3% of the time it hits the turn, so it realizes well under its 56.3%.
What changes realization
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| a bet before the river | a hand that folds when it misses only reaches the river after hitting |
| a street that checks through | the next card comes free |
| position | out of position, a hand acts first on every street and usually realizes less |
