Paired Board Strategy: What a Paired Flop Really Changes
A paired board such as T♠ 7♠ 7♦ changes less than it looks. Against hands without a seven, top pair A♣T♣ keeps almost the same equity as on the unpaired T♠ 7♠ 3♦: 75.1% against K♦Q♣ on both. What changes is the danger from one card: only two sevens are left, so trips are rare, but against them top pair falls to 8.9%, and to 0.4% against a full house.
Queen-jack facing a small bet on T‑7‑7
In the big blind with Q♦J♦, you called an open from under the gun. The flop comes T♠ 7♠ 7♦, you check and the opener bets 33% of the pot. Fold, call or raise?
See the answer
A 33% bet asks for 19.9% equity. Q♦J♦ on T♠ 7♠ 7♦, with the turn and river to come:
| Opener's hand | Q♦J♦'s equity |
|---|---|
| 6♥6♣, small pocket pair | 42.9% |
| A♥T♥, top pair | 29.9% |
| A♥K♣, two overcards | 29.0% |
| 9♠9♦, pocket pair below the ten | 26.6% |
| K♥Q♥, dominating king-queen | 19.6% |
| 8♣7♣, trips | 6.6% |
Against most hands that bet, Q♦J♦ has more than the 19.9% the price asks for; only hands that already hold trips or better, or dominate the queen, leave it short.
Top pair on a paired board and on an unpaired one
Equity of A♣T♣ with the turn and river to come:
| Opponent's hand | T♠ 7♠ 7♦ | T♠ 7♠ 3♦ |
|---|---|---|
| K♦Q♣ | 75.1% | 75.1% |
| 9♠9♦ | 84.0% | 83.6% |
| T♦9♦ | 75.1% | 79.7% |
| A♠K♠ | 56.4% | 53.4% |
When the paired card is out there
| Opponent's hand | What it holds on T♠ 7♠ 7♦ | A♣T♣'s equity |
|---|---|---|
| 8♣7♣ | trips | 8.9% |
| T♥T♦ | full house | 0.4% |
On a paired board, top pair is rarely in danger, but when it is, it is drawing thin.
