Limped Pots: Small Pot, Deep Stacks, Wide Ranges

Limped pots are pots where nobody raised before the flop. The pot is small next to the stacks, and neither player has shown strength: the limper did not raise and the big blind checked. Both ranges stay wide, and the stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) is much higher than in a raised pot. A made hand on a low board is then often ahead, but the limp hides some strong hands too.

8♠7♠ in a limped blind vs blind pot

The small blind limps and you check in the big blind with 8♠7♠. The flop 6♣ 4♦ 2♥ checks through. The turn 8♥ gives you top pair and a gutshot, and the small blind checks again. Check, bet 33%, 55% or overbet 125%?

8♠7♠ against small blind hands, with the river to come:

Small blind's handWhat it holds8♠7♠'s equity
Q♣9♣two overcards86.4%
A♠6♥pair of sixes88.6%
A♣4♣pair of fours88.6%
3♣3♥pair of threes, gutshot95.5%
8♣3♦pair of eights, weaker kicker93.2%
K♥8♣pair of eights, better kicker15.9%
4♠4♣a set9.1%
7♥5♥a straight3.4%

8♠7♠ is ahead of the overcards and the weaker pairs, pocket threes included, and behind the better eight, the set and the straight. The author's answer is the 55% bet: after two checks, a fresh top pair is well ahead of a range of weak pairs, draws and overcards; the bet gets value from 6-x, 4-x and small pocket pairs and denies equity to the overcards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a limped pot?

A pot where nobody raised before the flop: players only called the big blind, and the big blind checked.

Why is the SPR so high in a limped pot?

Because the pot is small. Blind vs blind with 100bb stacks, a limped pot is 2bb on the flop for 99bb behind: an SPR of 49.5, against 17.7 in a pot the button raised to 2.5bb.

Can a player who limped have a strong hand?

Yes: a limp only says the player did not raise. When the small blind limps and the board runs 6♣ 4♦ 2♥ 8♥, 4♠4♣ and 7♥5♥ both beat 8♠7♠.
