Small Blind Strategy: Playing the Hardest Seat at the Table
Small blind strategy: the small blind has already put 0.5bb in the pot, but it plays out of position and the big blind still acts after it. When everyone folds to it, a raise to 3bb risks 2.5bb to win the 1.5bb in the pot: as a pure bluff, the big blind has to fold 62.5% of the time. Facing an open, a call is cheap but lets the big blind in behind.
A♠8♠ in the small blind facing the button
The button opens to 2bb and you are in the small blind with A♠8♠, 100bb deep. Fold, call, 3‑bet to 8bb or 3‑bet to 12bb?
See the answer
The options, with 100bb:
| Option | What you add | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Call | 1.5bb | 30% equity, big blind still to act |
| 3‑bet to 8bb | 7.5bb | 68.2% folds for a pure bluff |
| 3‑bet to 12bb | 11.5bb | 76.7% folds for a pure bluff |
Before the flop, A♠8♠ against hands the button opens:
| Button's hand | A♠8♠'s equity |
|---|---|
| A♦4♥ | 67% |
| T♣7♦ | 63.8% |
| 7♥6♥ | 60.7% |
| K♥T♦ | 60% |
| Q♦J♥ | 59.3% |
| K♣Q♣ | 56.3% |
| J♣9♣ | 56.3% |
| 5♦5♣ | 47.6% |
| 9♦9♥ | 32.7% |
| A♥J♦ | 31.9% |
A♠8♠ has more than 56% against the unpaired hands without an ace in this table and dominates A♦4♥. The call plays out of position with the big blind still to act; the 3‑bet to 8bb costs 4bb less than the one to 12bb and needs fewer folds. The expected answer is the 3‑bet to 8bb.
When everyone folds to the small blind
Only the big blind is left to act. What a raise has to fold out, as a pure bluff:
| Small blind's raise | What it adds | Folds needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5bb | 2bb | 57.1% |
| 3bb | 2.5bb | 62.5% |
| 3.5bb | 3bb | 66.7% |
A bigger raise needs more folds; when called, the small blind plays the rest of the hand out of position.
