Live Poker Tips: Act in Turn, Say It Out Loud, Protect Your Hand
Live poker tips start with procedure, because in a card room a gesture can count as an action. Under the Poker TDA rules, action in turn is binding; facing a bet, a single oversized chip is a call unless you first say raise; and string bets are not allowed. Say your action out loud, wait for your turn, and keep your cards until the pot is pushed. Each room's house rules decide in the end.
A limper in front of you
On the button with A♥9♥ and 100 big blinds, UTG limps for 1bb and the players in between fold. Fold, over-limp, isolate to 5bb or isolate to 8bb?
See the answer
The author's answer is the isolation raise to 5bb. From late position, raising a limper can win the pot before the flop when everyone folds, and the button plays the rest of the hand in position; A♥9♥ dominates the weaker aces a limper can hold, and, being suited, it can make the nut flush. The small size keeps the weakest calling hands in.
Spots like this one are rare in our own library, so it is worth replaying if limpers are common in your room's games. Of the 647 puzzles in Poker Puzzle Trainer (counted on 15 October 2026, by reading the answers each puzzle offers), only 3 offer limping as an answer, and this is the only one where you choose the size of an isolation raise against a limper.
