Checking Back the Flop: When Betting Only Gets Called by Better
Checking back the flop means the preflop raiser checks when the opponent checks to them, instead of making a continuation bet. It fits a hand that a bet would not help: one that is far behind the hands that would call and ahead of the hands that would fold. The pot stays small, the turn comes for free, and the hand can still win at showdown or improve.

A♣5♦ against big blind hands, with the turn and river to come:
| Big blind's hand | What it holds | A♣5♦'s equity |
|---|---|---|
| 9♥8♥ | pair of nines | 16.3% |
| T♠T♣ | overpair | 14.8% |
| 7♣6♣ | pair of sevens | 15.9% |
| 8♥6♥ | open-ended straight draw | 54% |
| K♥J♥ | no pair, no draw | 73.4% |
| Q♣T♣ | no pair, no draw | 71.8% |
| J♦2♦ | no pair, no draw | 73.6% |
Against a pair, A♣5♦ has about 15%; against hands with no pair and no draw, it is above 70%. If it bet and were called only by better hands, a 33% bet would need 24.8% folds and a 75% bet 42.9%. The author's answer is the check: this board connects with many hands of the big blind's defending range, and many ace-high hands prefer checking.
Bet or check back: what each line does
| Bet | Check back | |
|---|---|---|
| Hands with a pair or a draw | call and keep their equity | no bet to call, no chips added |
| Hands with no pair, no draw | mostly fold | stay in the hand |
| Your hand | builds a pot it is often behind in | sees the turn for free |
