Second Pair: A Showdown Hand, Not a Hand to Build a Pot
Second pair is a pair with the second-highest card on the board (Q♠9♦ on K♥ 9♣ 4♠), or a pocket pair that sits between the top card and the others (9♠9♦ on K♥ 7♣ 5♦). It beats draws and weaker pairs, and loses to top pair and everything above. A showdown hand, it wants a cheap river, not a big pot. Not to be confused with two pair.
A pot-sized all‑in on a paired river
Heads-up, in a 3‑bet pot, you hold 9♣9♠ in the big blind. You check and call on K♠ 7♦ 5♥ and on the 2♣ turn. The river is the 2♠ and the small blind moves all‑in for the size of the pot. Fold or call?
See the answer
The hand. 9♣9♠ is a pocket pair below the king: it loses to every king, every deuce, the sets and the pocket pairs above it, and beats every bluff.
The price. A pot-sized all‑in asks for 33.3% equity: the jam has to be a bluff only a third of the time.
The decision. The author's answer is the call: the jam is polarized, the missed straight draws can only win by betting, and 9♣9♠ beats all of them. Folding here under-defends and teaches opponents to bluff every paired river.
What second pair beats, on the flop
Q♠9♦ on K♥ 9♣ 4♠, equity with the turn and river to come:
| Opponent | What it holds | Q♠9♦'s equity |
|---|---|---|
| 6♦6♣ | pocket pair below the nine | 91.2% |
| A♠5♠ | ace-high with a backdoor | 83.1% |
| 9♥8♥ | the same pair, weaker kicker | 76% |
| Q♦J♣ | two overcards to the nine and a gutshot | 71.6% |
| J♠T♠ | gutshot and two overcards | 61.6% |
| A♥K♦ | top pair, top kicker | 20% |
| K♦J♦ | top pair | 18.4% |
Against everything weaker, second pair is a clear favorite; against top pair like A♥K♦ or K♦J♦, it keeps only about a fifth of the pot, and less against two pair. The kicker matters too: Q♠9♦ is a 76% favorite over 9♥8♥.
How to play it
- Check more, bet less. A big bet with second pair folds the weaker hands it beats and gets called by the kings it loses to.
- Call bets from hands that bluff. Facing a polarized bet on a board where the draws missed, second pair is a classic bluff‑catcher; how often to defend is the minimum defense frequency.
- Fold to the hands that do not bluff. When the bettor rarely bluffs, second pair is just a losing call: see exploitative poker.
- Keep the pot small. With second pair, the plan is to reach a cheap showdown, for example by checking back the flop.
