River Strategy: Every Hand Wins or Loses
River strategy starts from a simple fact: there are no more cards to come. Every hand is ahead, behind or tied, with no draw. A bet then has only two reasons: getting called by a weaker hand (value) or folding out a stronger one (bluff). As a pure bluff, a half-pot bet has to win 33.3% of the time; a pot-sized bet, 50%.
K♣5♣ in the small blind, first to act on the river
Blind versus blind, you bet the flop and the turn with K♣5♣ and the big blind called twice. Board Q♣ 9♦ 6♣ 2♠ A♦, 28bb pot, 80bb deep. Check, bet 33% or bet 120%?

If the hand goes to showdown, K♣5♣ against big blind hands:
| Big blind's hand | What it holds | Result for K♣5♣ |
|---|---|---|
| A♠3♠ | pair of aces | loses |
| Q♥J♥ | pair of queens | loses |
| T♥T♠ | pair of tens | loses |
| 9♠8♠ | pair of nines | loses |
| J♣T♣ | missed flush and straight draws | wins |
| 4♣3♣ | missed flush and straight draws | wins |
| 8♥7♥ | missed straight draw | wins |
In this table, K♣5♣ only beats the missed draws: against the pairs, a bet only wins by folding them out.
| Bet | Amount | Folds needed |
|---|---|---|
| 33% pot | 9.2bb | 24.8% |
| 120% pot | 33.6bb | 54.5% |
The author's reason: after two calls, the big blind's pairs are capped, and a large bet puts the most pressure on them; the K♣ also removes some of the strongest calls, such as A‑K and K‑Q. A check would only win against the missed draws, which would rarely call a bet. The expected answer is the 120% bet.
Three river decisions
| Decision | With which hand | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Value bet | a hand ahead of most of what calls | calls from weaker hands |
| Bluff | a hand that loses at showdown | folds from stronger hands |
| Check | a hand that sometimes wins at showdown | seeing the showdown without paying more |
