Poker Hand Reading: From a Wide Range to the Hands You Beat
Poker hand reading means narrowing the hands an opponent can hold with each action they take. You start from what they could have before the flop, then ask at every street which hands would play this way. A bet, a call or a check does not name a hand; together, they make some hands likelier and others rarer. The goal is not to guess one hand, but to know which of the remaining hands you beat.
9♠8♦ after three passive actions
Heads-up on the button with 9♠8♦, you made a small c‑bet on K♣ 8♥ 3♦ and the big blind called. The J♠ turn went check-check, and the big blind checks the 6♣ river. Check back, bet 33% or 50%, or overbet?

Hands that can play this way, at showdown on K♣ 8♥ 3♦ J♠ 6♣:
| Big blind's hand | What it holds | Result for 9♠8♦ |
|---|---|---|
| 6♦5♦ | pair of sixes | win |
| 5♠5♥ | pocket pair below the 8 | win |
| A♣3♣ | pair of threes | win |
| Q♠T♠ | missed straight draw | win |
| A♥Q♥ | ace-high | win |
| K♥9♥ | top pair | loss |
| J♦9♦ | pair of jacks | loss |
The line leaves weaker pairs, missed draws and ace-high, which 9♠8♦ beats, and some kings and jacks, which beat it. The author's answer is the 33% bet: a small size keeps the weaker pairs and ace-high calling, while bigger bets get called mostly by the kings that beat 9♠8♦.
Reading the big blind's line
| Street | Big blind's action | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Preflop | calls the button's open | a wide range: pairs, aces, broadways, connectors |
| Flop K♣ 8♥ 3♦ | check-calls a small c‑bet | a hand worth continuing: a pair, a draw or ace-high |
| Turn J♠ | checks | the strongest hands become rarer, without being ruled out |
| River 6♣ | checks again | many weaker pairs and missed draws |
