C‑bet in Multiway Pots: Why Bluffs Fail and Value Bets Grow
A c‑bet in multiway pots follows a simple rule: bluff less, value bet more. A bluff wins only if every opponent folds, and their folds multiply: if two players each fold half the time, they both fold only 25% of the time. With several callers, someone usually holds a piece of the board, so your strong hands get paid and deserve bigger bets.
Apply it three-handed
On the button with A♠K♦, you opened and both blinds called. The flop comes K♠ J♠ 7♥ and it checks to you. Check, bet 25% of the pot, or bet 70%?
Why bluffs fail multiway: the folds multiply
If each opponent folds a given share of the time, independently of the others, all of them fold this often. The fold rates below are examples, not measurements.
| Each opponent folds | 1 opp. | 2 opp. | 3 opp. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 50% | 25% | 12.5% |
| 60% | 60% | 36% | 21.6% |
| 70% | 70% | 49% | 34.3% |
A bluff of a third of the pot needs 25% folds and a half-pot bluff needs 33.3%. Heads-up, those thresholds are often reached; against three opponents, even players who each fold 60% of the time all fold only 21.6% of the time. The threshold itself is explained in how often a bluff must work.
What to bet instead
| Your hand | Heads-up | Multiway |
|---|---|---|
| strong made hand | bet, size by texture | bet, often bigger: more hands can pay |
| draw | bet or check | check more often, unless the draw is strong |
| air | bluff on boards that favor you | check most of the time |
The three-handed spot above belongs in the first row: A♠K♦ on K♠ J♠ 7♥ bets for value, not as a bluff, so the fold math does not decide its size. Two spades and a jack leave the blinds flush draws, straight draws and weaker pairs that can pay.
