Why
KQo in the BB versus a BTN open is one of the strongest defends in the matrix; it crushes the bottom of a near-100 percent BTN range and flops strong top pairs and broadway draws. Flatting is fully GTO here: it keeps the BTN wide range in the pot, avoids folding out the dominated hands KQ beats, and lets you contest flops where the BB enjoys range and nut advantage. KQo also mixes some 3‑bets for value, but at 35bb the flat is a high-EV, low-variance line that does not isolate the BTN to only its strong continues.
Key idea
KQo is far too strong to fold and strong enough that flatting (vs always 3-betting) keeps the BTN entire wide range in, maximizing value from dominated holdings. Strong broadways defend by call as a high-EV default HU.
Common mistake
Folding KQo or always 3-betting it. Folding a dominating broadway is a clear leak; always 3-betting forfeits value by folding out the worse hands KQ beats.
