Why
A4o in the BB versus a BTN open is a standard defend: the ace blocker reduces the BTN strongest combos and you have an overcard plus a live ace with which to flop pairs and wheel equity. At 65bb deep, flatting is preferred over 3-betting a weak-kicker offsuit ace because you realize equity cheaply in position-disadvantaged spots rather than bloating the pot OOP where the A4 plays awkwardly when called. Some A-x offsuit combos mix as 3‑bet bluffs, but the pure flat is the EV anchor here.
Key idea
Offsuit aces are premium defends in the BB HU: the ace blocker and dominating-pair potential make even A4o an easy call against a wide BTN. Deeper stacks favor flatting weak-kicker aces over 3-betting them OOP.
Common mistake
Auto-3-betting every ace OOP. With A4o at 65bb, jamming a 3‑bet bloats the pot with a dominated kicker out of position; flatting realizes equity far better.
