Micro Stakes Strategy: Adjusting to Players Who Call Too Much

Micro stakes strategy usually starts from one assumption: many opponents at the lowest stakes call too much. If yours do, two adjustments follow from the arithmetic. Bluff less, because a bluff only works when the opponent folds: a pot-sized bluff needs 50% folds. Bet bigger for value, because worse hands pay. Check the assumption against the player in front of you before you apply it.

Q♠T♠ after a missed flush draw, against an unknown opponent

On the button with Q♠T♠, your flop c‑bet on A♣ 9♠ 4♠ was called, the 2♦ turn checked through, and the big blind checks the 2♣ river. Check back, bet 40% or bet 110% of the 28bb pot?

What each bluff needs:

BetFolds needed
40% pot28.6%
110% pot52.4%

The author's default answer is the 110% bet: a polar overbet uses the bettor's nut advantage and folds out medium-strength hands. Against a calling station, the author's answer becomes the check: do not overbluff a player who folds too little on the river, and keep the showdown value of Q♠T♠, which still beats the missed draws below it:

Big blind's handWhat it holdsResult for Q♠T♠
J♠8♠missed flush draw, jack-highwin
8♠7♠missed flush draw, eight-highwin
6♠5♠missed flush draw, six-highwin
K♠J♠missed flush draw, king-highloss
9♥8♥pair of ninesloss
A♦7♦pair of acesloss

Other adjustments against a calling station

In each one, the bet gets bigger because the calls come from worse hands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main adjustment at micro stakes?

If your opponents call too much, bluff less and bet bigger for value: a bluff needs folds, and a value bet needs calls from worse hands.

How often must a pot-sized bluff work?

Half the time: a bet the size of the pot needs 50% folds to break even. A player who folds less than that turns the bluff into a loss.

Should you stop bluffing completely?

Not against every player. The adjustment depends on how often the opponent in front of you folds, not on the stakes alone.
