Why
River (J 9 8 5 2). Hero pairs the board with the 5-club giving bottom pair (fives) and ace kicker; A-diamond/5-diamond makes only three diamonds (with 2-diamond) so there is NO flush and no straight. Bottom pair is a thin bluff‑catcher that beats busted draws but loses to every Jx, 9x, 8x, two pair and straight. An overbet of 120% pot folds out exactly the worse hands you beat and gets called only by better, the textbook trap of betting a hand that is too good to fold but too weak to value-bet.
Key idea
Bottom pair on the river is almost always a check: it has showdown value against bluffs but no value targets to bet, so betting either folds out worse or gets raised by better.
Common mistake
Treating bottom pair plus an ace kicker as a value hand and overbetting it; the ace kicker does not play, and on a four-to-a-straight-ish board fives are near the bottom of hero's range.
