Best play: Raise / 3-bet

Why

Hero is BTN first to act with Q9s at 35bb. The HU BTN opens ~80-100% of hands, and Q9s is a genuinely good holding rather than a marginal one: two reasonably high cards, the same suit, and a one-gapper that makes straights both up and down. Against a BB defending very wide it flops top pair, flush draws and open-enders constantly, so it has real value-when-called on top of fold equity. Folding or limping a connected suited hand this strong on the button is clearly worse; raise (open) is the EV-max line.

Key idea

Connected suited hands like Q9s are among the best opens on a HU button, not borderline ones. High-card strength plus two-way straight and flush potential give excellent postflop equity against the wide BB defense.

Common mistake

Underrating Q9s and limping or folding it. The one-gap suited structure flops huge equity HU, so passing up the raise leaves clear EV on the table.
