Button vs Big Blind: How the Flop Decides Who Is Ahead
Button vs big blind is one of the most common battles in poker, and the flop decides who is ahead far more than the preflop edge does. Before the flop, K♠J♦ has only 59% against 8♥7♥. On K♦ Q♠ 4♥ that becomes 92.6%, but on 7♠ 5♦ 3♣ the big blind's 8♥7♥ is ahead with 77.9%. High and ace-high flops favor the button's opening hands; low, connected flops favor the suited connectors the big blind defends with.
Jacks in the big blind on Q‑T‑5‑2‑2
In the big blind with J♣J♦, you check-called the flop Q♦ T♣ 5♣ and the turn 2♠. The river is the 2♥ and you act first. Check, bet 25% or bet 100%?

The hand is final, so each call is a win or a loss for J♣J♦:
| Button's hand | Result for J♣J♦ |
|---|---|
| K♥T♥, pair of tens | win |
| T♦9♦, pair of tens | win |
| A♥K♦, missed straight draw | win |
| A♣K♣, missed draws | win |
| A♣5♦, pair of fives | win |
| Q♠8♠, pair of queens | loss |
J♣J♦ beats every pair below queens and every missed draw, and loses to any queen. A small lead gets called by the tens and fives the button might check behind, and costs little when a queen calls.

Equity of the button's hand against the big blind's, with every card to come:

| Before the flop | 59% | 59.2% | 57% |
| K♦ Q♠ 4♥ | 92.6% | 73.6% | 76.4% |
| A♠ T♦ 2♥ | 73.3% | 96.9% | 81.6% |
| 7♠ 5♦ 3♣ | 22.1% | 19.6% | 71.2% |
| 8♦ 6♠ 4♥ | 18.8% | 22.5% | 23.7% |
What each flop does
| Flop | Who it helps | Why |
|---|---|---|
| K♦ Q♠ 4♥ | the button | its high cards pair the board or stay above the big blind's |
| A♠ T♦ 2♥ | the button | the ace pairs the button's ace-x hands |
| 7♠ 5♦ 3♣ | the big blind | straight draws and pairs for small connectors, not for T♣8♣ |
| 8♦ 6♠ 4♥ | the big blind | low cards pair; even T♣8♣ catches a pair of eights |
